Oh boy where do I begin…….. This Mixtape is a very special piece to me because it is a tribute to being a DJ/Turntablist/Producer. Product_90 is a guy who I met when I was part of the Jazz Addixx. He was learning how to make beats, over the years he would send me beats. I had really liked what he was sending me. I told him to make me a folder of as many beats as he can together. He sent me over 400 beats. At first I felt overwhelmed but then I thought to throw it into my phone and listen while I was at work trimming the list down. I went from 400 plus down to 200 in a few days. I left it at 200 for a week listening daily then worked it down to 122. Finally I was able to get the list to 22 songs. I would just work on a song as it hit me since attention to detail was a must on this record. I wanted to be less technical and more soulful on the cuts. I made this project as if it was my last… I hope that it translates in sound.

After I finished doing cuts on the songs, I gave unowndc a ring and requested his assistance to make the project pop in only the way he can. I gave him the songs and wanted him to bring it all together to make the listen a really fun experience. I also gave him the 22 instrumentals that Product_90 produced, even the ones I didn’t use. Unwondc used the unused beats to create the interludes and mix the songs together to make it feel like a mixtape. The content of it being a tribute to the culture comes from the heavy word use that unwondc crafted in the project. Not only is unowndc a great producer/engineer but he is also well skilled as an emcee and dj. I got to also give a shout to Rafik of Cult Fiction for the verse on the project.

So with the project Finished, I was building with my guy Marcus at One Collective (go check out their goods and buy some because its super dope) and we decided to use the tape a a soundtrack to the skate team video they were working on and drop a collab. So here we are doing what we do... I used to skate. Blockhead Skateboards started out in my hometown of Roseville CA. I competed in a few AM comps. My best trick was a 360 air walk on a launch ramp. In no means is it what is going on now but I remember buying a pink “Tony Hawk” deck when it first hit the shelves. That my friend is GOLD!!!!! So Im so glad this this can be tied to a skate project. By the way, I was a Lester Kasai fan in the 80’s.

mike flips. Oh mike flips. You do compose a perfect mixture of break beat chaos with melodical grind bass. This is both relaxing and groovin' at the same time. Harks back to the 90s sample scene, yet has a new vibrant feel. I got the tape version as well, just to feel closer to the sounds. Rich H
